From the very beginning, Sue Broadway, Founder and President of Extra Touch of Class, Inc., has built her business on quality and service. Her creative framing talents and enthusiasm for working with clients have resulted in continued success since she started the business in her basement in 1973. Over the years, with the dedicated help of Sue's family and talented employees, ETC has expanded its commercial and retail services and increased its divisions to further serve the art needs of the D.C. metropolitan area. Our clientele include individuals, corporations, galleries, artists, interior designers, art consultants, architects and developers. The following art services are available through ETC, Inc. in Alexandria, Virginia and the Broadway Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia and now worldwide via the web.
History of Extra Touch of Class
1973 - In the Beginning
One of the Washington area's most respected, full service art enterprises sprang from a cramped room where artist and founder, Sue Broadway, armed herself with a mitre box, hand-held matting tool, hammer, glue and nails to support her picture framing needs.
Sue's business continued to grow due to referrals from neighbors and local artists which led to a manor account with nationally known wildlife artist, Edward Bierly. Her creative approach to framing, the ability to work with clients and unbridled enthusiasm for the art world kept the basement room overflowing.
1978 - Extra Touch of Class, Inc.
Due to expanding inventory and lack of space, it soon became apparent that the hobby shop phase was over and it was time to relocate. Extra Touch of Class was incorporated in 1978 and our first shop was in Springfield, Virginia. ETC quickly developed a reputation for quality custom framing and prompt courteous service which attracted other major galleries to come to ETC. Among those who sought Sue's artistic framing capabilities were The Atlantic Gallery and P. Buckley Moss Gallery, both in Georgetown's Foundary Building.
1980 - ETC Gallery
Within two years, ETC had again outgrown it's space and it was time for another move; this time to Alexandria where we established a modern, fully equipped production and warehouse facility. With this relocation, the ETC Gallery was created which allowed Sue to display a unique selection of beautifully framed artwork.
In the years to follow, ETC became a major art source for the public, as well as art consultants and designers. We continued to collect and display a variety of works by emerging artists and those of international acclaim.
1986 - Complete Art Services
ETC recognized the need for a full art service and now supports numerous designers and other galleries in the area with professional services unique to the industry. We will provide the art, tastefully frame it, deliver it to your home or office and hang it.
ETC also provides art and design consultation. Our experienced consultants are available to help you plan, select and implement an art program that meets your needs in the home or office.
1987 - Broadway Gallery
August 1987 was another milestone for ETC with the opening of Broadway Gallery in Fairfax, Virginia. Sue wanted to open a gallery that offered the public something different: a diverse selection of investment and decorative artwork ranging from very traditional to ultra contemporary which would also showcase the distinctive framing of ETC. She wanted to make the gallery uniquely elegant while simultaneously creating a comfortable and inviting place where customers are welcome to browse or bring in their artwork to be framed.
1995 - Family Owned and Operated
ETC is a family business. Over the years, Sue's husband Doc, daughter Caron, and son Barry have all been very active in the growth of the business. In May of 1995, Sue entered into semi retirement and passed the torch to Barry Broadway who now serves as President of ETC. Caron is the marketing director for the company and works at Broadway Gallery as an art consultant.
1996 - Broadway Gallery Relocates
On August 1, 1996, Barry too saw a dream fulfilled with the move of Broadway Gallery to its new location in Fairfax Promenade Shopping Center.
Barry's goal for the company today is "to attain and maintain the highest standards in the framing industry by having the best design and production staff available and to be art educators as well as art providers." As we look to the future, quality workmanship and personalized service will continue to be the emphasis of our daily activities. You can depend on us to meet your art and framing needs.
