Biography

Silvia Gonzalez Roman is a fine art photographer in the Washington, D.C. area. Born in Havana, Cuba, her family immigrated to the United States in 1961 when she was a young child. Seeking the promise of liberty, her parents settled in New York City where they assimilated to their new environment while always maintaining pride in their Cuban heritage and customs. In these formative years, Silvia witnessed how ties to family and homeland could be abruptly severed, causing her to experience the impermanence and ephemeral nature of life's moments.

Through her photographic life, Silvia seeks to see more completely and create a lasting visualization of an ordinary moment. Her patient attention to detail, perspective and relationships are a reflection of her desire to capture the essence of her subject. Silvia's intimate compositions cause the viewer to experience the same stillness and presence she senses in creating the photograph. Her subjects include landscapes, seascapes, architectural compositions and street photography. By focusing on and discerning the simple order and micro connections that exist within her chosen frame, the image is given a life. It is by honoring these connections that truth and beauty are found and preserved.

Silvia entered the world of fine art photography ten years ago. Choosing to focus her priorities on raising her family, she took a break from her demanding career with the Department of Justice. During that time, she rediscovered her artistic self by interacting with other artists and studying photography. She is a member of the Great Falls Studios, a consortium of over 100 artists living or working in Great Falls, Virginia, and is a regular participant in their annual Studios Tour. She is also a member of the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Arts Center in Alexandria, Virginia and F11, a Women’s Photography Collective. Her work continues to be accepted in juried shows, often receiving awards. Her images are also exhibited in a number of local venues. Silvia enjoys sharing her mindful photographic practice with others by offering presentations and teaching workshops.

A few years ago, Silvia returned to work as a federal prosecutor in Washington, D.C. She now spends her time balancing her two passions, photography and advocating for the cause of justice.
